The Castle of Otranto
THE CASTLE OF OTRANTO
Horace Walpole
Read by Neville Jason
The Castle of Otranto is regarded as the first Gothic novel. The story of Manfred, Prince of Otranto, is a melodramatic tale of usurpation, lust and terror. The events are narrated with a gripping pace, introducing a range of macabre and supernatural effects in an atmosphere of intense horror, mystery and suspense. Walpole’s tale still retains all the lurid and fascinating power it had when it first appeared in 1764, a classic of its kind.
Neville Jason trained at RADA and has appeared with the English Stage Company at the Royal Court and the BBC, as well as in repertory theatres all over the UK and abroad. He was a member of the BBC Radio Drama Company and can be heard in radio plays such as The Lord of the Rings. Neville Jason has also recorded all of Proust’s Remembrance of Things Past.
